Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I have always wanted to make a difference in the world, and my philosophy is that it starts with children. The focus on education in South Korea has drawn me to want to teach there to help educate future generations. Working with children has always made me feel energized and excited when they learn something new, and this, combined with my appreciation of South Korea, makes me an ideal candidate to teach English there. South Korea is a place I have grown to love since I visited last summer. I fell in love with the atmosphere, the scenery, and the people. Whenever I would try to speak Korean, the people were patient and understanding, and I felt encouraged by this and drawn by the welcomeness. This was something that helped when I encountered cultural differences, as I was open-minded and had a willingness to learn. I saw these cultural differences as a positive and a chance to learn more about South Korea. I was also in awe of the mountains surrounding Seoul and the palaces surrounded by modern infrastructure, which all increased my desire to live there. With this enthusiasm, I was excited about the potential of teaching English in South Korea.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

Recently, I volunteered as a teaching assistant in a primary school, helping out in lessons with classes aged 7 to 10. In these lessons, I would explain instructions to the children that motivated them to learn and complete their activities, keeping the children on track, for example, by creating bridges with different resources and during guided reading time. This enabled me to establish solid relationships with the children, which allowed me to understand their needs and abilities and cater to them. This relationship, I believe, can enable the children to become more successful in their academic studies. During this task, I helped to develop my communication skills. I was also communicating with the staff and main teacher to make the classroom run as successfully and efficiently as possible. Each school day was different, and I felt I was able to adapt and remain patient with the children when challenging situations and behaviours occurred. I had to be flexible, as in one situation I would be in the main classroom aiding groups of children with their activities, and in another situation, I would be one-on-one with a child with a different ability, focusing on spelling. Some of the children in the classroom did not have English as their first language, and I would overcome challenges here by being patient with the children and explaining the activity in a way they would understand. Here I would utilize my listening skills by understanding the needs of the children and responding to them. My organizational skills that I developed in my current job were further enhanced as I would need to organize classroom materials for the main teacher and know which staff to speak to about relevant issues, such as whenever students were in trouble. The experience of volunteering at this school solidified my enjoyment of working with children and made me want to teach English in South Korea even more.

In my position as an ESL teacher, I would seek to use my skills and experience to support students in reaching their highest potential, as I believe that every child needs to have a stimulating environment to develop. With my communication, patience, listening and organisational skills, I could assist each child in developing their own potential and learning styles. I could incorporate different learning styles into lessons and make the content and resources relevant to the lives of the children. This will utilize my flexibility and adaptability skills within a teaching environment, as I believe that all children are unique and have something special they can bring to their education. A part of this is having a positive attitude and an open mind and encouraging the children to try their best in their work, both independently and cooperatively. As a native English speaker, I have something that can help the conversations of South Korean students advance in the globalized world, and this is something I hope to achieve as an ESL teacher in South Korea. I know this would be a role in which I would flourish and could contribute significantly.
